Ryan Bisio is an American head basketball coach, athletic administrator, and accomplished musician whose career bridges the worlds of sport and art. A former collegiate and professional player, he has coached at the high school, FIBA, and junior college levels, earning recognition as one of California’s most dynamic leaders. Since taking the helm of the men’s basketball program at College of the Redwoods, Bisio has guided the team to historic success, capturing multiple Golden Valley Conference championships and four Conference Coach of the Year awards in five seasons. In 2023, he was named the California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches Association State Coach of the Year. He also serves as the college’s Director of Athletics.
Beyond the sidelines, Bisio is a published singer-songwriter (ASCAP), producer, and performer with nine studio releases to his name. His music has taken him across California, Denmark, and the Czech Republic, where he has shared stages with Grammy Award winners and acclaimed artists including Shelby Lynne, Ryan Montbleau, Bhi Bhiman, Richard Julian, and Rolling Stone’s Top 100 Guitarist of All Time, Greg Ginn. In 2017, he released the EP Bona Fide while opening for Grammy-nominated Icelandic rock band KALEO—an experience he calls “a moment that affirmed all the instincts that led me down this path.”
His 2022 single Reconciled reflects the introspective depth of his songwriting. “Reconciled was born during a confusing transition into new beginnings,” Bisio says. “It’s a plea for closure—but also a reminder to trust the process of change, which at times can feel radical and uncomfortable. Being open to things we don’t fully understand. Allowing time to color in the empty spaces.”
Bisio holds a bachelor’s degree in Contemporary Music from California State University, Monterey Bay, and a master’s degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration from Concordia University, Irvine. He has taught songwriting through the Arcata Art Institute and continues to pursue both coaching and music as parallel callings.
Currently, he is finishing a book titled The Musicality of the Game: The Artistry of Basketball, a project he describes as his life’s work: “the most fundamentally comprehensive breakdown of the universal mechanics of basketball ever written, as applied to music theory.” Alongside the manuscript, he is recording a new studio album in Northern California.
